Rheumatology

Physio talking to a patient during a rheumatology appointment

Rheumatology is an umbrella term for a broad range of conditions. We see many of these in the clinic; the most common include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, inflammatory back pain, hyper-mobility, and carpal tunnel.

Who needs Rheumatology Physiotherapy?

Rheumatology conditions involve inflammatory processes of our immune system that affect a variety of our soft tissue structures i.e. bone, tendon, skin; hence the high prevalence in our environment. recurring joint pain, spontaneous episodes of swelling and neck/back stiffness/pain are common presentations seen. They often behave in a pattern that comes and goes so symptoms fluctuate and can be ‘treated’ as isolated incidents. As a result, many of these presentations are misdiagnosed and result in long-term delays in diagnosis. Bluntly speaking, patients manage pain and disability for a lot longer than they should. AJ Physio strives to reduce these stats by recognising, referring and managing rheumatology conditions.

Why is this needed?

The majority of conditions are driven by genetic factors and not caused by the patient’s behaviours. However, many secondary issues can develop. Some can be avoidable or managed.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including cardiovascular fitness and strength are key factors in this.

How can AJ Physio help?

Targeted rehabilitation can improve and maintain joint and tendon health, whilst sports massage provides pain management. We work closely with specialist physios, doctors and Rheumatologists to assist with diagnosis and management.
